Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about therapy with Alicia

What do you specialise in?

I specialise in helping women to heal from and avoid marrying abusive men. I also support women who are wanting to get married but may be facing internal and/or external obstacles.  I am also happy to support married women who are going through reproductive challenges.

Are you a feminist?

I used to think I was one a long time ago, when mainstream feminism was still about safety and respect for women.  Today, feminism in modern society has become a vague and loaded term, so instead, I stand for healthy men and women, carefree children, and respectful relationships.

Do you see couples?

I no longer provide joint therapy as a starting point, because my experience and knowledge inform me that there is important and often lengthy work to be done individually before joint therapy can be safe and useful.  Joint therapy with existing, regular clients will be offered where appropriate.

Can you work with my husband/boyfriend/father/adult son?

No.  I truly value men and recognise their influence within family life and have spent so many years working with men.  However, over time I've come to realise that I am not the best person to counsel men, simply because most men respond better to being counselled by other men.  I provide referrals to existing clients.

I'm experiencing abuse at home, can you help?

It is extremely important that victims get the right support when they ask for help, and I would be happy to see you initially, especially with all the misinformation about abuse out there.  However, my ethical obligation as a private counsellor is to refer you to an organisation that specialises in abuse for ongoing support.  Abuse needs multi-agency support, which I am not able to provide.  It would be irresponsible for any private therapist to provide confidential work with either perpetrators or victims of family abuse because the very nature of family abuse thrives on secrecy.  If you are located in Australia, please contact Relationships Australia for support.  If you are located in Singapore, please contact AWARE for support.

Do you see international clients?

Yes. There are no legalities that prevent me from seeing clients from different parts of our world.  The only considerations would be time difference, language limitations and internet connectivity.  Please note that sessions are all timed for GMT+8 and conducted in English only.

What are your fees?

My fee is AUD170 per hour for individual sessions.  At this stage of my practice (and mothering), I am not able to provide sliding-scale fees or discounts.  Please also note that counselling fees in Australia are not eligible for Medicare rebates.
